A couple of hours later, while I’m still sober, at least in a technical sense, Nicki is plopping beside me after several more drinks, and lots of conversation afterward. I haven’t been sitting here the entire time. No, I’ve been getting to know Nicki’s friends and having a good time, but now I’m tired and so tense from the sexual tension between Nicki and me that I know I’ll be sore in the morning.

“Mm, hey, why don’t you drive me home?” Nicki asks, “I can’t drive and do not want to fight for a place to sleep here.” She laughs and leans her shoulder against me. She looks flushed, and her eyes are half-open.

“You sure?” I ask.

“Yeah. You can stay the night if you want,” Nicki says.

My shoulders tense even more. She’s too drunk to be inviting me over to hook up.

“I mean…to sleep, so you don’t need to get a ride home,” she adds as if she’s able to read my thoughts. Her words are ever so slightly slurred. Her tolerance is undoubtedly higher than mine.

I exhale, relieved. I wanted nothing more than to be tangled in sheets with Nicki, but not now. Not when she is too intoxicated to drive or walk without wobbling slightly.

“Alright,” I say and stand up from the love seat.

Nicki stands too and opens her hand, her keys dangling from her fingers. I take them from her and lead her towards the door. Nicki says some tipsy goodbyes on the way, and I wave at those who are still left.

After getting my coat, hat and purse back on, I make sure Nicki has her things, and we’re heading out into the snow.

“Hell,” I mumble as I step out, and my feet sink immediately into about seven more inches of snow than when I’d arrived.

“Good thing we’re leaving now,” Nicki says and runs out in front of me through the snow, somehow managing not to slip and fall on her ass.

“God, help me,” I chuckle and look towards the sky. Heavy snow lands on my face, but I enjoy the feeling, especially after being in the warm house for so long.

I follow Nicki to her car and get it unlocked. She climbs into the passenger seat and I into the driver's before getting it started. I wait for her to put her seat belt on before I crank the heat up and head out of the driveway.

“Address?” I ask.

Nicki hums for a moment before she reaches forward and navigates to her address on the GPS in the dashboard.

A moment later, I’m cautiously heading down the snow and ice-covered roads at a snail's pace due to the low visibility.

“Thank you for coming, seriously,” Nicki says.

I look over at her for a split second before looking back at the road.

“Of course,” I smile softly, “I’m glad you gave me another chance.”

“High School was shit,” she says, “clearly for both of us.”

I nod. “Still, you didn’t deserve that.”

It’s quiet for a moment, and I think maybe Nicki is
